A Statement in Walnut: A Custom Coffee Table Finds Its Home at Sidney Peak Ranch
There are pieces of furniture—and then there are pieces that quietly define a space. This custom black walnut coffee table, crafted by Emma Rose Hardwoods, is firmly the latter. Now resting in its new home at Sydney Peak, it brings together raw natural beauty and refined craftsmanship in a way that feels perfectly at home in the mountains.
The Beauty of Black Walnut
Black walnut is one of the most sought-after hardwoods for a reason. Rich in tone, full of character, and endlessly unique, each slab tells its own story. This particular piece showcases deep chocolate hues, warm undertones, and dramatic grain movement that draws you in from across the room.
Rather than cutting away imperfections, we embraced them.
Clear Epoxy: Preserving Nature, Not Hiding It
Natural fissures, knots, and voids were carefully filled with crystal-clear epoxy, preserving the organic integrity of the slab while adding durability and smoothness. The result is a seamless surface that still celebrates every natural line and contour.
The epoxy doesn’t compete—it enhances. Light moves through the clear fill, highlighting the depth and dimension of the wood beneath. It’s subtle, but striking.
Designed for a Mountain Modern Lifestyle
At Sidney Peak, where architecture meets the surrounding landscape, this table fits effortlessly into a mountain modern aesthetic. Clean lines, a matte black base, and a low-profile silhouette allow the walnut to remain the focal point.
This isn’t just a coffee table—it’s a grounding element. A place for morning coffee, après-ski gatherings, and everything in between.
From Raw Slab to Finished Piece
Each step in the process was intentional:
- Hand-selecting the slab for grain, character, and proportion
- Precision epoxy work to stabilize and preserve natural features
- Careful sanding and finishing to achieve a smooth, matte sheen
- Pairing with a custom metal base for balance and strength
No shortcuts. No mass production. Just one piece, made for one home.
A Perfect Fit at Sidney Peak
Sidney Peak Ranch offers a setting where design and nature coexist beautifully—and this table feels like it was always meant to be there. Surrounded by expansive views and thoughtfully designed interiors, it adds warmth, texture, and a sense of permanence to the space.
Bringing Custom Furniture to Life
At Emma Rose Hardwoods, every piece is built to reflect both the material and the home it’s going into. This walnut coffee table is a perfect example of that philosophy—where craftsmanship meets setting, and natural beauty becomes functional art.
If you’re looking to create a one-of-a-kind statement piece for your home in Steamboat Springs or beyond, we’d love to bring your vision to life.
The beginning
This coffee table begins with a singular black walnut slab—selected for its depth of color, movement, and natural voids formed over decades of growth. Rather than conceal these openings, we preserve them.
Clear epoxy is used sparingly and intentionally, filling cavities and checks while remaining fully transparent. The result is not a surface that competes with the wood, but one that reveals it—allowing light to pass through areas once shaped by time, weather, and decay.
Walnut’s rich browns and subtle purples contrast against the clarity of the epoxy, creating depth without distraction. The filled voids read as negative space made solid, maintaining the slab’s original silhouette while enhancing stability and usability.
Every pour is executed slowly and precisely to ensure optical clarity and long-term integrity. Once cured, the surface is meticulously leveled and finished, resulting in a table that feels seamless to the touch while remaining visually complex.
This piece balances refinement and restraint—natural material, preserved honestly, elevated through technique. The epoxy does not define the table; it simply allows the walnut’s story to remain visible.
