Entryway Design in The Sanctuary, Steamboat Springs

This custom black walnut floating shelf in Steamboat Springs, Colorado is a beautiful example of handcrafted design meeting functional elegance. Installed in The Sanctuary in Steamboat Springs, this piece was created to elevate the home’s entryway with a warm, modern mountain aesthetic.

Built from solid black walnut, the shelf showcases rich natural grain, depth, and character—making it a true statement piece. As a custom floating shelf, it provides a clean, seamless look while maintaining everyday functionality for an entryway drop zone.

Located in one of Steamboat’s most desirable communities, this project reflects the growing demand for custom wood furniture in Steamboat Springs, especially pieces that blend luxury design with natural materials. The floating installation keeps the space open and refined, aligning perfectly with modern mountain home design trends seen throughout Northwest Colorado.

At Emma Rose Hardwoods, we specialize in custom walnut furniture, floating shelves, and handcrafted woodwork in Steamboat Springs and Routt County. Each piece is designed to complement high-end interiors while bringing warmth and authenticity into the home.

Project Beginnings

This project began with an exceptional six-inch-thick black walnut slab, sourced specifically to meet our client’s vision for their entryway. The scale and density of the material are uncommon, chosen not only for its visual presence but for the structural confidence required of a floating installation.

At this stage, the slab remained largely untouched. The wood was being studied—its grain, movement, and edge—before any cuts were made. This period is essential, allowing the final proportions and orientation to be determined with intention rather than assumption.

The piece was cut precisely to size, milled, and finished to reveal the depth and character inherent to the walnut. Once complete, it will read as both architectural and understated—appearing to float effortlessly while carrying the weight and history of the material.
